Ready to take a free ride into Lake Tahoe?

Placer County is considering launching a two-year pilot program that will offer public transportation from the county into the region using the Tahoe Truckee Regional Transit bus routes. And it would be totally free.

The Board of Supervisors is recommending the program, which may start as early as January.

In addition to cutting back on the area’s carbon footprint, county leaders see the free fare as a way to get more residents to enjoy the great outdoors and hospitality destinations across Tahoe.

A similar program into Tahoe from Truckee has seen ridership increase by 32 percent.

Lake Tahoe, the jewel within the Sierra Nevada Mountains, is known for its beaches, nature trails, snow sports, parks, night life getaways and family-friendly activities .

Whether you’re spending a snow day with the entire family, taking a hike within state parks, or enjoying the sandy beaches of Lake Tahoe, there may be no sweeter way to get there than for free.

Supervisors are expected to vote on the matter at the end of the year.
