Anyone who enjoys the great outdoors at Sunset Whitney Recreation Area will soon have more to explore.

The Rocklin City Council passed $472,000 in funding for park improvements, including the initial phase of the nearly one-mile east trail expansion. Community members and city leaders agree that the trail system is a top priority.

Currently, the west trails at the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area cover about 2.5 miles of trail and pathway, which are popular destinations for casual outings or more vigorous workouts.

During the pandemic, more residents have enjoyed any opportunity to take in the outdoors, so the expanded outdoor recreational space cannot arrive fast enough.

With the funding secured, the city said the next steps include identifying areas for restoration, soliciting contractors and then approving the plan.

A large portion of the funding is made possible through state grants and some city funds. Once the city fully approves the plan and grant, work can commence on the trail expansion. In the near future, the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area will address two additional miles of underdeveloped pathways as well.
